AI agent payments won't drive Bitcoin adoption. In a 36-model study, AI preferred stablecoins to pay and Bitcoin to save.

The popular argument is that AI agents will need money, Bitcoin is money for the internet, so agents will drive Bitcoin demand. The problem: an agent working for a company that holds dollars, paying a company that wants dollars, has no reason to route through Bitcoin. And huge transaction counts don't mean huge value. A billion payments of a tenth of a cent is $1 million.

Permissionless isn't the same as decentralized. An agent can hold tokenized dollars without a bank account, and for three cents of compute it likely doesn't care that the issuer can freeze funds. Lightning can move stablecoins, and those payments can still require Bitcoin liquidity, but that is too small to build an adoption thesis on.

The part that holds up is saving. The Bitcoin Policy Institute ran 36 AI models through 28 monetary scenarios more than 9,000 times. For payments, the models preferred stablecoins. For storing value, nearly four out of five responses chose Bitcoin. If agents ever earn and keep real wealth, what they save in matters, and it fits how Bitcoin monetizes: people save in it first, and payments come later.

There is one more mechanism. AI makes surveillance and financial enforcement cheaper and more automatic, which makes an asset with no issuer more valuable to anyone holding their own keys, even if no agent ever spends a sat.
