Key Takeaways:

  • NEAR Intents reported security incident resulting in a loss of approximately $3.8M.
  • The exploit was due to a bug in its Omni deposit and withdrawal system.
  • Several networks have been temporarily suspended and the affected funds made whole.

The services disrupted temporarily by NEAR Intents were in relation to its cross-chain deposit and withdrawal system after identifying a security incident. The protocol said the preliminary loss stands at about $3.8 million, adding that affected funds will be reimbursed in full.

NEAR Intents Traces Exploit to Omni Infrastructure Bug

NEAR Intents reports that it was a bug trigger that occurred when the Omni deposit/withdrawal feature interacted with the NEAR Intents smart contract. The vulnerability on the contracts side has already been patched, the team said.

NEAR Intents and near.com were anticipated to return to normal operations around an hour after the announcement, with some cross-chain operations requiring more time.

In the initial disclosure of the protocol, the attacker was not identified. It has stated the case was reported to the police and security companies as well as blockchain analysis companies are aiding in tracking the stolen assets and determining recovery options.

11 Networks Face Extended Deposit and Withdrawal Restrictions

Several networks will continue to have their deposits and withdrawals blocked for approximately a further 12 hours until the infrastructure is patched up. The affected networks contain the following such as: BSC, Polygon, TON, Optimism, Avalanche, Stellar, Monad, LayerX, Adi, Scroll and Plasma.

Meanwhile, users with assets from such networks on NEAR Intents will be able to swap those assets for others upon the return of the core service. The restrictions place the focus on deposits/withdrawals and not on an outright halt to asset swaps.

NEAR Intents Pledges Full $3.8M Compensation

The protocol reads that the losses will be covered in full, the immediate financial loss to users of the game affected by the incident will be minimised to approximately $3.8 million. NEAR Intents have yet to release a full technical report on the way it was exploited and the movement of the money after it was extracted from the protocol.

A detailed incident report will be expected in the next couple of days. The report will hopefully shed light on the exploitation trajectory, vulnerable parts of the Omni ecosystem, details of the timeframe and of what is being done to remediate everything.

Exploit Follows NEAR Intents’ Role in Blocking Stolen Crypto

The incident has come just after NEAR Intents was caught on the hook for blocking money traceable to the recent Bitget hack. Previously, NEAR Intents stated that it had blocked over $50 million in suspicious funds tied to that case and frozen over $500,000.

The new exploit has sparked questions about the underlying cross-chain infrastructure of the protocol, mere days after it helped trace and limit the flow of stolen crypto.

As of this writing, NEAR Intents has fixed the critical contract element and will work out the other issues on its infrastructure before fully opening all its supported routes for deposits and withdrawals.
