Bro really lost $30M because he forgot to use a VPN ????

fell down a rabbit hole today, need to share.

group of guys (met on gaming forums, most 20-22) social engineered one dude out of $240M in bitcoin by posing as Google/Gemini support. fine, evil genius stuff.

then instead of laying low they went full lottery winner: private jets, mansions in Miami AND the Hamptons, the "ringleader" allegedly dropped $569k in one night at a club.

best part though one guy set up an exchange account with $30M of the stolen funds and didn't even bother masking his IP. FBI traced it straight to his $47,500/month rental basically instantly.

relevant because the ringleader (22yo, Malone Lam) is set to plead guilty today the 11th of 18 defendants to fold. looking at 14 years minimum.

can't decide what's dumber, the spending spree or forgetting incognito mode exists after stealing a quarter billion dollars
